Does a doula provide medical care?

No. A doula does not provide medical care and is not a medical professional. She will not for example listen to your baby’s heart beat or do internal exams. If it looks like your baby might  arrive before you are able to leave your home or en route to hospital or before a midwife arrives, your doula will call an ambulance. In an emergency she will assist you to birth your baby in the same way as any other lay person.
